"In getting a band together to 'play some tracks,' collaboration is always going to be key- what recorded music is good at doing, live groups aren't so good at (repeatability, optimisation, obsessive finessing), but live groups can do some amazing things that recorded music just can't. Peforming these tracks isn't just a matter of reproduction or translation, but a constant improvised negotiation- a way of taking a structure and making it live and breath as something that is performable. It moves making music from a process of gradually infinitesimal refinement into something that is spontaneous, open to change, and thoroughly in the body.
These past years, I've lived in India, quit my job, started a new job, moved house lots of times, built a geodesic dome, and started an MA in contemporary critical theory. That much movement and transience has made it quite difficult to keep working on music, but as soon as I had the time and space again, the tracks had no choice but to get made! Over the next year, with a bit more permanence and fixity, there will be a lot more music getting made, and a lot more performances going on! Having the chance to play together with people that I respect and like is a real treat, and something that I want to make the most of.
For a long time, through all the flashes in the pan, or passing interests in other genres and styles, disco and funk, and the music of the queer disco culture of the 70's and 80's has been an enduring happy place for me."
